Charm casting - divination

Charms, trinkets, talismans… all different names for these tiny, shining objects that we love to attach to our bags, jewelry, or clothing.  But did you know that these little treasures can also be used for divination?

Though charm casting has recently gained popularity, this ancient practice actually dates back to the dawn of time, long before oracle or tarot cards were ever drawn. It belongs to the family of cleromancy, or the art of casting lots to reveal destiny. While the earliest well-documented forms of cleromancy come from antiquity, we know that even prehistoric tribes used bones, stones, and shells to take a glimpse into the future. Found across cultures and continents, this timeless art is truly universal, requiring no particular belief other than an openness to the realm of possibilities.

Under the umbrella of cleromancy, alongside bone casting, one also finds the use of dice, beans, coins, carved sticks, or collections of small, symbolic objects such as buttons, shells, and sewing trinkets.

Today, the most common technique is to cast a handful of charms and let them fall naturally onto a reading cloth or mat. The casting surface can represent a calendar, an astrological wheel, spheres of life such as love, career, and family or even a world map. The interpretation of the charms’ symbols, their positions, and their proximity to one another reveals a message that is both clear and intuitive. Drawing from the collective unconscious, the symbols carried by each charm resonate with universal meaning and dream symbolism. When combined with the reader’s intuition and extrasensory perception, they offer precise, vivid, and deeply personal insights to the seeker.

While beautiful pre-made charm sets can be purchased, practitioners are also encouraged to create their own, gathering meaningful trinkets over time and crafting personalized casting mats. A handful of cherished tokens collected since childhood and a simple hand-drawn paper chart are enough to begin reading. Because this form of divination is so accessible and direct, the experience and spiritual gift of the reader are all the more essential in bringing the messages to light.
